Most resident guests visit Majete Game Reserve during their stay, only one and a half kilometres away. We can arrange game drives in the reserve for Ng’ona residents. You can self-drive, subject to African Parks’ regulations, or you can choose to be driven in a specialist safari vehicle with a guide.
Boat trips in the reserve, above Kapichira Dam, are a magnificent way to observe birds, elephant, hippo, crocodiles and numerous species of antelope in the pristine beauty of natural forest. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, boat trips have been suspended due to the greatly altered river course as a result of a severe cyclone in 2022. The boat trips are run by African Parks and updated information will be available when the damage to Kapichira Dam has been repaired.
Some visitors arrive by mountain bike. There is a direct route from Michiru Mountain, close to Blantyre, to Kapichira Falls. It is a difficult journey of approximately four hours’ duration. Those who undertake it, report on it with great enthusiasm. Cyclists usually arrange to be met by supporting friends to transport them and their bicycles back uphill to Blantyre.
Those interested in European history might like to visit the nearby grave of Richard Thornton. He was a geologist who accompanied the Scottish explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, on a journey from the East African coast, up the Zambezi and Shire Rivers in 1863. The rapids in front of the lodge are one of six sets where the travelers had to dismantle their boat, ‘The Pioneer’, to continue exploration of the African interior.
The peaceful location of Ng’ona Lodge is an ideal one for those who want to pass time reading any genre, from history to contemporary fiction. In fact, many visitors do simply fill their days alternating between reading and cooling off in the pool.
